AMERICAN ITALIAN FOOD COALITION URGES USTR TO NOT PUNISH CERTAIN ITALIAN PRODUCTS WITH TARIFFS
Group Argues USTR Found The Right Balance On Previous Airbus Tariff Rounds
WASHINGTON, 7/29/20 – The American Italian Food Coalition (AIFC) submitted a public comment urging the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) against the imposition of tariffs on certain Italian food imports. USTR is considering additional action against a variety of European products in response to a World Trade Organization (WTO) decision against Airbus.
The AIFC comment notes that Italian food products like pasta, coffee, and wafers “are uniquely Italian in nature and are not in any way related to the ongoing subsidy dispute regarding the Airbus consortium countries, to which Italy is not a party.”
Former Congressman Lou Barletta (R-PA) and Chairman of AIFC issued the following statement –
“Italy is one of our greatest allies. As the world works to recover from COVID-19, we should not penalize others for the illegal behavior of France and other European countries, especially Italy – a friend who has been hit especially hard by the virus. USTR found the right balance in its previous decisions on Airbus tariffs and I have faith President Trump will be fair again.”
The American Italian Food Coalition is an alliance of more than 450 Italian companies, manufacturers, and trade associations dedicated to ensuring American consumers continue to have access to high-quality, affordable imported Italian products including pasta, coffee, biscuits, and wafers.
