Trade

Trade between Italy and the United States is important to the economic vitality of both nations. Unfortunately, in 2018 the World Trade Organization (WTO) concluded four European countries were unlawfully subsidizing Airbus – one of the largest aircraft makers in the world. Initially, despite playing no role in these subsidies, Italy was included in the subsequent list of countries subject to tariffs by the U.S. This temporary inclusion put at risk American jobs, consumer prices, and a valuable economic partnership. Thankfully, uniquely Italian products have since been excluded from any retaliatory lists. The AIFC is committed to ensuring this continues to be the case.

Impact on Small Businesses

Italian products play an important role in the American economy and for the many small and local businesses who sell them. Tariffs on imported Italian goods would raise consumer prices and threaten American jobs like importers, distributors, retailers, and more. This is why so many Italian-American small business owners support the mission of the AIFC to prevent costly new tariffs on these imports that are so essential in many communities across America.

A Balanced Diet

Italy produces some of America’s most beloved foods. Italian food reflects the Mediterranean diet model, which is popular around the world and an excellent option for those looking to diversify their diets. The Mediterranean diet model promotes a balanced diet rich in a variety of foods to be consumed in moderate portion sizes. Current dietary policies place too much emphasis on individual nutrients, leading to foods containing them to be classified as "bad" or "good." Telling people to avoid “bad” foods is confusing, has unintended consequences, and ignores the benefits all food can have in the overall diet.

The Mediterranean diet model also provides a useful framework for nutrition policy. We urge policymakers to shift the narrative to a more positive approach based in lifestyle and wholistic nutrition to reflect the links between diet, environment, lifestyle, and overall health maintenance. Italian food producers are proud to provide American consumers with products inspired by the Mediterranean diet model – responding to a growing appetite for responsible portion sizes, balance, and health.

Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability

Italy is one of Europe’s leaders in environmental sustainability. Italian farmers are dedicated to protecting and continuing the country’s rich traditions with delicious and locally grown produce and products. New ecological packaging solutions are also becoming a growing trend in Italy, as many in the food sector are focusing on the use of recyclable and biodegradable materials. These practices preserve the land for future generations, produce delicious food, and limit the region’s environmental footprint. American consumers are demanding more action in this area and Italian manufacturers are leading the way.
